Nebraska-Omaha used a power play goal from Bryce Aneloski to defeat Minnesota State 2-1 in overtime on Friday in Mankato, Minn., but not before a scary moment that saw UNO goaltender Ryan Massa stretched off the ice.
Massa was injured in the first minute of the extra frame, with MSU defenseman Evan Mosely crashing into the freshman netminder.
Soon after the incident, MSU’s Adam Mueller was charged with a slashing penalty. Aneloski scored the game-winning goal on the resulting power play, coming down the slot and beating MSU goaltender Phil Cook through traffic with a wrist shot.
UNO forward Matt White had given UNO a 1-0 lead early in the first period, but a third-period power play goal from Jean-Paul Lafontaine leveled the game for the purple Mavericks and forced overtime.
With the win, UNO bumped its record up to 12-9-4 overall and 9-5-3 in the WCHA. MSU fell to 7-17-1 and 3-13-1 in the conference.
The teams will finish their two-game set on Saturday in Mankato.
